II. WILLIAM GOUDIE, J.P. 1980

This nicht, tae see oor ongauns through,
We've gane aince mair tae Cumnock (New).
Will Goudie's banes, wi flesh an spirit,
Will grace oor Chair wi meat an merit.

New Cumnock born, New Cumnock bred,
The pitheid road, the miner's tred -
He howks nae mair Knockshinnoch coal,
Nae mair breathes stour in clarty hole.
He's filled his share o reamin hutches
An traivels nou in caurs, no cages!

Had Fortune taen anither sklent,
He micht hae gane tae Parliament,
But I jalouse yon Southron benches
Wad ne'er hae suited Willie's hainches.
Tae suffer fuils he's ne'er been fain,
Sae Lunnon's loss is Strathclyde's gain.

For Strathclyde's needs fill this man's life.
For them he'll thole the clash an strife
O coamittee an cooncil chaumers
Tae daud sense intae fellow-members,
Wife an granweans keep him canty
(Twa sons he has, tae mak him vaunty).

This nicht, for aince, he's rinnin free
'Mang couthy friens an baurley bree.
Time nou for us tae hae a word
Frae ane wha kens an loues the Bard.
