THE abuin is a leet o aw the minority languages in the EU as shawn bi the wabsites o EBLUL, Eurolang an the ither minority language wabsites that yaises the same leet an map. Up until aboot October 2005, the Scots language wis includit as yin o the UK's minority leids but efter the new wabsites cam oot on the Warld Wide Wab aroond that time, the Scots language wis walit oot tae be sneddit frae the leet. The threap aboot ither languages bein in the process o bein eikit tae the wabsite refers tae the minority languages o the new kintraes that's raicently jyned the EU athin the last twa three years. The Scots language isnae waitin tae be eikit tae thon leet like the languages o thae new kintraes. It wis there areddies an haes been deliberately sneddit oot alang wi Ulster Scots.

EBLUL, the European Buroo for Lesser Yaised Languages, is makit oot tae be the champion o AW oppressed minority European languages an the body that tells governments no tae discriminate agin ony o thaim. Whit an awfu peety it disnae practice whit it preaches.

Whit is it aboot the Scots language that maks it the coo's tail wi awthin that's gaun? Aye the hinnermaist tae be gien ony uphaud, respect or siller frae the Scots Executive, the Scottish estaiblishment or the media, an noo
frae EBLUL, Eurolang, Euromosaic an the wabsites o ither organizations that threaps thair ettles tae be the forderin o AW minority languages. Ay, aw except for Scots appearinly.

Daes onybody ken o ony ither minority leid that wis on the original leet an haes haed tae dree the same insults as Scots, apairt frae its ain kin, the Ulster Scots? Ay, it's aye guid tae ken whae yer freends is.
Whit wey is the Scots language the only yin tae be discriminatit agin bi EBLUL an its pals? Is it juist cause they ken that we aye dae oor girnin amang oorsels an no tae thaim or the yins that coonts?

C'mon you yins in EBLUL's Scottish Sub Comatee, get thaim telt!!

He haes been complouterin wi the fowk at ICANN an ither sib organisations that haes tae dae wi the wark o sortin an developin new gTLDs (e.g. .CAT, .berlin etc an howpfully .SCO)
Euan an dotSCO haes been invitit tae forgaitherins in August an September o this year tae complouter mair an tae help come up wi a wycelike propone for .SCO that they howp shuid be ready for aboot Januar 2007 when the application process for new tap level domains is stertit up agane. A dotSCO forgaitherin tae sort oot the richt gate it shuid tak an whit dargs it shuid get yokit intae is tae be hauden in August as weel.

The mair support dotSCO can tak tae the pouers that be, the better its chances maun be o winnin tae an official .SCO domain. A quick keek at its wabsite at www.dotsco.org/ will shaw ye that there mony organisations, companies an groups fendin thair support tae the projeck but dinnae think that juist cos the group that you're a maimber o is leetit there, ye dinnae need tae gie ony pairsonal support. If ye hinna duin it areddies, get richt doon tae it noo an rax on yer ain pairsonal support tae [CENSORED: emailaddress]

Haes onybody speirt support for the dotSCO projeck frae the Scots Pairlament, the Scots Executive, the pairlament Cross Pairty Groups, the Scots political pairties or e'en the individual MSPs? If no, then whit for no? Aiblins this micht be a mair yuissfu kinna darg that oor ain CPG on Scots can tak on for a chynge.

In this modren electronic age, Scotland can haud its heid high wi aw the muckle contributions it haes makit an still aye maks tae the electronic an computer industries, baith wi regaird tae hardweir an saftweir. Its ither byename, "Silicon Glen", haes been richt braw weel earned sae wha wad be sae thrawn as tae nasay Silicon Glen the richt tae weir an yaise its ain .sco identity?

EU Multilingualism Report
THE Catalan MEP Bernat Joan haes praisentit his comprehensive Report tae the European Pairlament's Culture Comatee, that sets oot faur raxin new propones anent multilingualism in the EU. The report ettles tae set a new program for meaninfu multilingualism an tae estaiblish language richts fit for a 21st century Europe.
It's jaloused there aboot forty-six million speakers o stateless, regional an minority languages (RMLs) in Europe, makin up aboot ten per cent o the EU population. For aw that, EU ettles is sair wechtit tae the Union's twinty yin official languages as set oot in the EU Treaties, in spite o the fack that some RMLs haes mair speakers than some o the official languages haes.
The Report threaps the European Commission's Framework Strategy on Multilingualism disnae gaun faur eneugh an maks a nummer o new propones. It cries for:-

An EU Languages Act tae streamline EU language policy an legislation;
An EU Language Ombudsman, similar tae whit Canada haes, tae mak siccar o language richts;
Estaiblishin a European Agency for Multilingualism;
Aw European languages tae be gien official status in the EU;
An EU leet o endangered European languages, tae gie priority help tae thaim that's maist threatened;
Aw EU citizens tae hae the richt tae communicate wi EU institutions in thair ain languages.
The report highlichts the economic an social benefits o multilingualism pyntin oot research that shaws the economic benefits tae states o haein stateless, regional an minority languages. It threaps an aw o research that demonstrates that bilingual fowk haes better cognitive abilities, helpin tae hyste the skills levels in a kintrae an pynts oot that investin in bilingualism an multilingualism is a social capital investment.

Mr Joan telt Eurolang that his report pits maist wecht on tae the maitter o lesser yaised languages, syne it wis time for the EU tae face up tae this maitter seriously. He wants the European institutions tae be truly committed tae real multilingualism in Europe, and this means the forderin o aw languages on equal tairms, regairdless o thair official status at maimber state level. He said that this report on multilingualism shuid be a milestane for thaim that care an are worried aboot real cultural diversity in Europe. The propones he pits forrit in the draft paper is airtit at fendin tools for lesser yaised languages tae survive an tae be able tae think aboot thair ain futures. He said they haed comploutered braidly tae come up wi thae practical an wycelike propones tae mak workable multilingualism a reality in Europe an that the European Commission haed makit a guid stert, but there wis muckle mair still aye tae dae. It's an individual's basic richt tae be able tae communicate in thair ain leid, a thing the EU haes been sweir tae recognise.

The report wis gien a guid support frae MEPs in the draft stage at the Culture Comatee an it will be debatit agane alang wi ony amendments on the 28t August. Readers is weel advised tae write tae thair ain MEPs speirin thaim tae uphaud Mr Joan's Report.

EMBRO TO THE PLOY

In simmer, whan aa sorts foregether
in Embro to the ploy,
folk seek out friens to hae a blether,
or faes they'd fain annoy;
smorit wi British Railways' reek
frae Glesca or Glen Roy
or Wick, they come to hae a week
of cultivated joy
or three,

In Embro to the Ploy.

Furthgangan Embro folk come hame
for three weeks in the year,
and find Auld Reekie no the same,
fu sturrit in a steir.
The stane-faced biggins whaur they froze
and suppit puirshous lear
of cultural cauld-kale and brose
see cantraips unco queer
thae days

in Embro to the ploy.

Jist pitten-out, the drucken mobs
frae howffs in Potterraw,
fleean, to hob-nob wi the Nobs,
ran to this Music Haa.
Register Rachel, Cougate Kate,
Nae-neb Nellie and aa
stauchert about amang the Great,
what fun! I never saw
the like,

in Embro to the ploy.

They toddle hame doun lit-up streets
filled wi synthetic joy;
aweill, the year brings few sic treats
and muckle to annoy.
There's monie hartsom braw high-jinks
mixed up in this alloy
in simmer, whan aa sorts foregether
in Embro to the ploy.
