SCOTS Project - www.scottishcorpus.ac.uk Document : 897 Title : Correspondence from Canada: Letter 49 - 08.07.82 Author(s): 852 Copyright holder(s): Name withheld Text The Maggie 10 July 1982. Dear Mum, Dad, & Al, Thanks for your letters, clipping, etc. WELL DONE, AL: 3 OUT OF 3!!! You'll can enjoy your holiday now, I'm sure. Talking about exam results, could you note down mine in your next letter and send them to me? I know roughly what they are but I'm not wholly sure. I assume that the stupid computer sent my results home when it should know that it also writes the assistantship cheques that keep me here... Oh well, that's machine intelligence for you! Carole's getting on very well in Tübingen, and she'll be sad to leave there in August. She'll be home for about 3 weeks and then she's flying to Cairo around Sept 8th, when she starts her job. It'll be highly unlikely that we'll see each other before Christmas, I doubt. Depending on "X" the unknown variable, I'll probably be home around mid-September, I hope no later. She's signed up for an MLitt at Glasgow, which means she'll spend another year (maybe two) between Cairo, Tübingen, and Scotland after her stint in Egypt as a teacher. Sorry to hear that the weather's miserable. I'm hotter than ever - - the temperature's well up to the 90°'s and I'm itching from various insect bites: Canadian summer's big Catch 22 are the bugs!! I'm hoping to go to PEI (Prince Edward Island - - of Green Gables fame) tomorrow to stay with the family of Ann, the girl in the Eng. programme who was among the UNB Quebeckers a few weeks ago. We'll both we working like crazy there, as I hope to finish Ch. 3 and she wants to write some short stories, but the change of environment should help rather than hinder. I'll be back Friday. I talked to my supervisor, Prof [CENSORED: surname], today and he gave me Ch 1 of my thesis back. My 2nd Reader, Prof. [CENSORED: surname], has now also read it, likes it, but has given me a list of 55 points which he questions. Ugh! So those will go to PEI too. But work is progressing, all right. I'm sending you a photo of me at Shediac on Good Friday. And you thought British Easter Holidays had bad weather!! That's the sea stretching out behind me, way out to Skull Island, an Indian burial ground, and beyond to PEI. If you ever got to see "Reds" (yawn) that's what it reminded me of. Well, I hope you're all well and that the results of the X-rays help in diagnosing Mum's problem. I sure could go some of your raspberry or strawberry jam!
