Then the hale lift abune wi their echoes did ring As they sang their wey back tae the hill, Hidden wings beatin fast tae the rhythm o Spring An my hert beatin fast tae the thrill O the wild tirlin cry o the whaup. Would that I were gaun wi ye, ye lang-nebbit birds, Tae the moss-hags, the mist an the rain, Back hame whaur the sauls o the Martyrs an herds Still steir tae that hauntin refrain The wild lanesome cry o the whaup; Whaur the wee muirland burns chuckle ower the stanes, An the wee troots come free tae the creel; A warm shiver o pleisure rins ower my banes At that music I mind o sae weel The wild trimmlin cry o the whaup. O mony's the day in the heather I'd lay Forenent oor auld hoose at Knowetap, Wi auld Mungo, a-watchin their coortin display As doun frae the sky they wad drap Wi that wild dirlin cry o the whaup. Throu hail, rain an snaw may ilk hen bird sit ticht, Or the corbies wad herry her nest, May her mate be aye ready tae gie them a fricht, That the muir micht forever be blesst Wi the wild hauntin cry o the whaup.
