I sat doun by the dyke-back whaur a hawthorn made a bield, An wi the win ahint me, I kept watch oot ower the field. A wee bit movement caught my ee, alang the rashy bauk, An doun the dyke-back cam a roe, wi quate an canny walk. She was cleidit braw in russet wi the sun bricht on her pelt An baith nose an ear were questin as she passed the larick belt. An near she cam, an nearer, tae the dykeside hawthorn tree Whaur I sat, nou hardly breathin, wi the gun across my knee. She [?]checked[/?], tae pree a mouthfu, whaur the gress grew saft an green, An cushats passed unheedit as I sat as still's a stane. She moved like something lowsed frae time, a spirit licht an free, As denty as a dancer, wi a sunglint in her ee, An she stepped sae licht towart me, wi a dignity an grace, That I rase wi hert near burstin, an we stuid there, face tae face. For lang, lang braithless saiconds I luikit in her een An saw nae fear, but simple pride, an smeddum o a queen. I raised my haun in pairtin as she turned tae lowp the dyke, An she cleared it like a swallow, wi naither fash nor fyke. Sae I turned back tae the cushats, still flittin tae an fro, An bagged an antrin ane or twa - but my thochts were wi the roe. This work is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
