I have been informed by both Mr Alex Salmond and Mr Sam Galbraith of their resignation as Members of the Scottish Parliament. The resignations took effect on 14 May 2001. Under the terms of the Scotland Act 1998, the decision on when to hold a by-election for the Scottish Parliament is a matter for me, as Presiding Officer. In the interests of the electors of Banff and Buchan and of Strathkelvin and Bearsden, I have chosen the same date for the Scottish Parliament by-elections as the date set for the UK Parliament General Election. I have therefore fixed the date for both by-elections for Thursday 7 June 2001. I have written to Mr Galbraith and Mr Salmond on behalf of the Parliament thanking them for their substantial contribution both to the establishing of the Parliament and their service to it in our first two years.
