ASPS badges and ties were now available. The 2001 Congress would be hosted by Kirkcudbright P.S. who planned a souvenir postcard for the event. Finally the ASPS were looking for someone to fill the post of Youth Officer. Vera Trinder order: [CENSORED: forename][CENSORED: surname] reported that this had now been sent off. President, [CENSORED: forename][CENSORED: surname], then introduced [CENSORED: forename][CENSORED: surname] – inviting him to give his display of Tristan da Cunha. Mr [CENSORED: surname] began by explaining where the island lay – halfway between Cape Town and South America. It had been discovered by the Portuguese in 1500 and, to this day, could only be reached by boat. Its main industry was crawfish. These were exported to America and Japan – very profitably. The first round showed the development of the island through its postage stamps which portrayed earthquakes, shipwrecks, volcanic eruptions and loss of life at sea etc. The first stamps were produced in 1952 with no varieties except on Postage Dues! Of interest was a Waterlow ‘Delacryl’ printing of two stamps perforated SPECIMEN. The round finished with a selection of picture postcards. The second round. Prior to 1952 there had been no post office, and mail had to be delivered/uplifted, irregularly, by passing ships – whalers etc. Prior to 1908, with no postal markings, only the contents of the letter gave a clue to its origin. We saw an excellent and full display of island cachets – at the time of these, genuine, mail had no stamps (mainly). From the late 60s early 70s we saw many visiting ships’ cachets. The display finished with cachets from ‘regular’ visiting ships. Vote of thanks: Mr [CENSORED: forename][CENSORED: surname] thanked and complimented Mr [CENSORED: surname] on a splendid display – from early development to latest ships calling. It had been a fascinating evening by an obviously very keen expert. This was heartily endorsed by the Society. Next meeting: Thursday 26 October, Mr [CENSORED: forename][CENSORED: surname] – ‘Century of the Cinema’. Tea Rota: [CENSORED: forename][CENSORED: surname], [CENSORED: forename][CENSORED: surname] Barrier: [CENSORED: forename][CENSORED: surname] The President closed the meeting by wishing everyone a safe journey home.
