Oct. 2001 Dear Head Teacher, SCOTS TUNG QUAICH COMPETITION 2002 I write with the knowledge and approval of Mr [CENSORED: forename][CENSORED: surname], Director of Education and Community Services, to invite your school to participate in Scots Tung’s second Scots language writing competition. Pupils in P6 and P7 and those in S1 and S2 are being invited to write either a short poem in Scots (any length up to a maximum of 16 lines) or a story in Scots prose (any length up to a maximum of one side A4 [primary] and up to a maximum of 1.5 sides A4 [secondary] ). Any subject or topic can be chosen. It is anticipated that this activity may fit well into language studies undertaken during January, when Scottish literature often finds a place in the curriculum. Teachers are requested to pick the best three entries from each class or alternatively, have the pupils choose the best three entries, and forward these to Mrs [CENSORED: forename][CENSORED: surname] by 28th February 2002 at:- [CENSORED: address] The three entries from each class will be given a certificate and the winning school from each of the Primary and Secondary sections will be presented with an engraved Quaich which it will hold for a year. The individual winners for both Primary and Secondary will receive a miniature quaich to keep. The two winning entries along with some of the runners up, selected by Scots Tung, will be published in the Scots Tung Wittins, which is posted in all East Lothian libraries each month. I very much hope that you will see this as a worthwhile activity which will enhance rather than add to what we recognize is an already crowded curriculum. Please do not hesitate to contact me, if you require further information. Wi couthie thochts, SCOTS TUNG, R. Fairnie (Secretar).
